Your vehicle bond can only be paid by credit card. You cannot pay your bond using a prepaid card.

+ How do I get to the branch?

+ Do you allow pick up or drop off outside of branch hours?

All guests are required to pick up and drop off during the hours specified for each branch.

DRIVER LICENCE

+ How old do I need to be to drive a Cheapa Campa motorhome or campervan?

Mighty Campers (Highball and Double Down), Cheapa Campa (Hitop and Endeavour) and Hippie (Hitop and Endeavour) drivers must be 18 years of age or over with a full driver licence.

For all other RV types drivers must be 21 years of age or over with a full driver licence and the licence must be valid for the entire booking duration.

+ What type of driver licence do I need?

A current and full motor vehicle driver licence is required to be shown at pick-up and all drivers need to be present. If the driver licence is not in English then we require an accredited English translation or an International Driver Permit. We do not accept Digital Driver licences.

It is important to select the correct country in which the driver licence was issued to ensure correct rates are calculated. If the hirer presents a driver licence that is from a different country to which the booking was created the guest may incur additional charges.

VEHICLES

+ Will my campervan have wheelchair access?

Unfortunately, our campervans and motorhomes are not equipped with wheelchair access. Additionally, the interior space is quite limited, and therefore does not accommodate a wheelchair.

+ Can I bring my bike?

Our motorhomes and campervans don’t have bike racks. Bikes may be stored inside the motorhome, however we request that bikes are stored in bike bags to avoid any damage to the interior of the motorhome.

+ How long does the battery system last?

The battery system will provide power for between 12 - 20 hours when fully charged depending on use.

Our vehicles operate on ancillary battery systems which power internal appliances such as the fridge, lights, media player and water pump.

The batteries only recharge when connected to mains power or will trickle charge when driving the vehicle. We recommend that the vehicle is plugged into mains power every 2 nights. Idling the engine won't provide enough power to recharge the house battery.

When you are connected, all equipment automatically runs on mains power rather than the battery. Appliances such as the microwave, rear air-conditioning and power points only run on mains power. The media player may run either on 240v (mains power) or 12v (battery power).

For the 12 Volt system to work, the 12 Volt main switch must be in the 'on' position. All vehicles can be connected to 240 Volt mains power via the supplied 15 Amp extension lead with a large earth pin. All approved caravan park circuits are rated at 15 amps.

+ Can I request a specific layout or vehicle length?

Vehicles can be requested by vehicle category, however we cannot guarantee a particular vehicle layout, make or model.

+ Will my vehicle be automatic or manual transmission?

All rental vehicles are automatic transmission.

+ Are dogs allowed to travel in the vehicle?

At Cheapa Campa, we’re happy for your pet dog to go on holiday with you but there is a pet cleaning fee of $250 if picking up on or before 31 March 2024. Picking up on or after 1 April 2024 is a pet cleaning fee of $299.

Service animals can travel in our RV’s free of charge with prior permission and proof of service certification.

We ask you to tell us in advance that you wish to bring your pet and to ensure your pet does not cause any damage to the vehicle. Should additional pet cleaning be required at drop off, additional cleaning charges will apply.

+ Do your motorhomes & campervans have Wi-Fi?

Our vehicles do not come with Wi-Fi.

+ Do I have to pay per kilometre (km)?

All 2WD Motorhomes and Campervan rentals come with unlimited kilometres. For more info on this, please see our terms & conditions.  Road User Charges for diesel vehicles apply in NZ, these are calculated based on the kilometres you travel and payable at the end of your hire.

VEHICLE INCLUSIONS

+ Do I have to pay a liability deposit when hiring in New Zealand?

The amount you are liable for in event of accident or damage is dependent on what Liability Option you choose. We are required to hold your credit card details for bookings in New Zealand and will charge that credit card in the event of accident or damage up to the amount you are liable for.

Find out more about our liability reduction options in our terms and conditions.

You are welcome to call us or email us and we will be in touch to explain this further.

Find out more information on our liability reduction options in the rental terms and conditions.

Our reservations team would be happy to further explain this to you. You are welcome to call us or email us with your phone number and we will give you a call.

+ What is included in the Value Pack?

The Value Pack, is a bundled extra which provides the highest Liability Option and selected value-added products/services for a great road trip. The minimum amount payable per rental for Value Pack will be based on the minimum rental period applicable for the booking. The maximum amount payable is 50 days per rental segment.

For a list of what is included in the Value Pack for your booking, please refer to the Terms and Conditions for your chosen vehicle.

+ Does my RV come with a gas bottle? Is there a charge involved?

Yes, all vehicles are supplied with a full gas bottle. Gas bottles must be refilled before the vehicle is returned, otherwise an additional fee will apply.

If you purchase the Re-fuelling pack or the Pre-purchased gas bottle, you may return the gas bottle empty upon the completion of your road trip.

PLACES TO STAY

+ Where can we camp at night?

New Zealand has a range of accommodation options to suit every traveller. Holiday parks offer excellent recreational opportunities, plus essential shower and toilet facilities. Powered sites enable you to connect your vehicle to electricity, and we recommend every camper does this every 3 days to top up the house batteries. Freedom camping is for those that cherish independance, however you must be travelling in a certified self-contained vehicle which means having fresh water, a toilet, and waste tanks for self-sufficiency.

In Australia and New Zealand, download the thl Roadtrip App from the App Store or Google Play.

What is the thl Roadtrip App?

If you are travelling with us, the thl Roadtrip App is your go-to before you travel and while you're on the road. Access handy tips from planning and preparation, what to expect at pick-up, a full show-through video of the camper you have booked and comprehensive on-the-road CamperHelp ‘how to’ videos. We guide you through preparing your camper for drop-off and finally, make it easy for you to go again – be it through renting or buying.

How will the app help you plan your roadtrip?

1. Find everything you need

The thl Roadtrip App displays your current GPS location then shows the nearest campsite and holiday parks, (free and paid), petrol station, free wifi, real-time road alerts, supermarkets, dump stations, public toilets, LPG filling stations, laundromats and in fact pretty much everything you need when you're on the road in Australia.

2. Watch the Show-through video of your camper

The thl Roadtrip App includes a full show-through video of your camper - showing you what it looks like and where to find everything. It's a requirement that you watch this video before you get here as it forms part of the pick-up process in the branch.

3. Watch the CamperHelp ‘How to’ Videos

We feature a bunch of useful 'CamperHelp' videos, showing you how to use the features of your camper - from plugging into power, to emptying the toilet cassette, setting up the dining tables and making the beds – you’ll be a pro in no time.

4. Plan your trip and book campgrounds and attractions directly in the app

Be organised and search along your planned itinerary route to pre-book campsites, holiday parks, attractions and experiences directly within the app.

5. Offline Content

One of the best features of the thl Roadtrip App is, no matter where you are, the maps work offline, you don’t need a Wi-Fi connection to be able to use the maps when you’re out of range, you just need to save them first. Perfect for itinerary planning when you are a bit more off the grid as Australia is big place with sometimes-limited mobile reception areas.

All videos within the app also feature the transcripts in different languages. We recommend you download these to your device before you leave to ensure you have access to them in case you do not have access to Wi-Fi or data connection on the road.

6. Join the conversation with other travellers

If you like reading user tips and feedback about places to stay and things to do, then the thl Roadtrip App will be super helpful for you. As a user of the app you are able to leave your own feedback and read others comments and recommendations - very handy if you are trying to decide where to stay for the night and you want to know which campground is more preferred by fellow roadtrippers.

Download for iPhone here or Android here.

*We are part of a collaborative project called GeoZone which aims to make it easier to travel responsibly by sharing facility locations, so if you find something not on the app, or if you find a location that's no longer there, you can submit it through the app and contribute to this awesome project.

ApolloConnect allows you to search and book campgrounds/holiday parks while on the road, as well as access great deals on local attractions. Download the ApolloConnect app from the App Store or Google Play.

WHAT TO DO BEFORE PICK UP

+ Should I download the thl Roadtrip app?

Yes, the thl Roadtrip app contains a section of safe driving videos, which you will need to view prior to starting your road trip. You can also watch our  RV “How To” videos.

+ Do I need to supply all driver details?

Yes. We encourage you to enter all driver details online through our online check-in link prior to pick up. You will need your reservation/booking reference and the surname of the booking. You are not required to enter passenger details, only drivers.

PICK UP PROCESS

+ How long will it take to check out my vehicle?

We encourage guests to allow at least 1 hour for vehicle pick up. One of our Guest Service Officers (GSO) will take you through the Rental Agreement (RA) and show you through your vehicle. During peak times your wait time may be longer than expected.

“How To” vehicle videos can be viewed via our thl Roadtrip app at any time, which is downloadable on the App Store or Google Play.

+ Do all drivers need to be present at the depot during pick up?

All drivers are required to show their driver licence to the branch, in person, prior to driving the vehicle. We prefer that drivers show their licence at pick up, however if that’s not possible, drivers may visit the branch prior to pick up and show their driver licence to a Cheapa Campa team member.

MY BOOKING

+ Who do I contact if I need assistance?

We encourage you to download the thl Roadtrip app in Australia and NZ.

Australia

For Roadside Assistance email [email protected] or call 1300 850 805 - this number will be on your vehicle key tag.

New Zealand

For Roadside Assistance email [email protected] or call 0800 788 558 - this number will be on your vehicle key tag.

+ Can I make changes to my booking?

Please contact reservations by email on [email protected] and quote your reservation number. We will then check whether we can fulfil your request.

+ What is a vehicle relocation?

Because we offer one way rentals, this frequently results in vehicles being located in the wrong city for their next rental. To assist in the “relocation” of these vehicles, we offer travellers cheap rates to move vehicles from city “A” to city “B”. For budget conscious renters this provides an ideal opportunity to travel between cities while still fitting in some sightseeing.

Please contact us if you're interested in a relocation.

ON THE ROAD

+ How often should I take a break?

We encourage you to always allow extra time for reaching your destination. Please take a break from driving every 2 hours.

+ Are there any restrictions on where I can drive?

At Cheapa Campa, we want you to stay safe on your road trip. All 2WD rental vehicles must stay on sealed roads. The only exception to this policy is well maintained access roads that are shorter than 10kms and lead to a recognised campground. No vehicles are permitted to drive on beaches. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for more information about travel restrictions that apply.
