This town boomed during the discovery of gold in 1852 but it is now renowned for its thriving arts and crafts community. Whitianga & Mercury Bay : east coast

Mercury Bay has an established tourist resort that takes advantage of the Bay's spectacular coastline which is ringed with islands and provides sheltered waters which is perfect for a wide range of water sports. The Bay is also home to the famous Hot Water Beach where, at low tide, visitors can lay in the sand and soak in the warm mineral rich water that comes from two underground fissures. Visitors to the area should also try to see Cathedral Cove. This stunning stretch of coastline is an absolute must see. Tairua & Pauanui : east coast
