Our holiday dream came true in New Zealand

Our holiday dream came true in New Zealand

We /me, my wife and our 8 years daughter / started our NZ holiday in Christchurch.

First goal was Lake Tekapo, we went through Darfield and beautiful hilly landscape of Canterbury. Almost no traffic. This first day drive it was a little fight with different car driving and different trafic rules. Lake Tekapo was beautiful, there we visited little church with breathtaking view from altar window.
Next day - Lake Pukaki, having perfect weather, could have good view on Aoraki and peaks of Alps. Then we passed Lindis pass and Cromwell, spending some time near Dunstan lake. In Queenstown, we had excellent view time from gondola view point and we tried also luge ride. On the hill we organized Milford sound cruise in I-center and headed to second day destination to Te Anau. Landscape we saw on the way was marvellous. Campervan site next to the lake is the best we experienced in NZ.
Next morning we had Milford sound cruise, it was great experience. It was the real  highlight of our NZ tour! Beautiful nature, perfect sunny weather, breathtaking scenery. Mitre peak allowed us to see it. On the way back we met first kea in NZ near Homer tunel, it did not look like having taste for our windsreen wiper rubber, looked scared a little. Mirror lake and Te Anau, stops we did on the way back to Queenstown, our third day destination. Dinner - fergburgers in the city center – one must try!
Forth day – Kiwi park, Queenstown lakefront with Saturday market and the city, Arrowtown, bungee jumping on Karawau bridge, wineyards visit and finally beautiful Wanaka with its lake. Only cca 150km this day and so much to do!
The other day we crossed the Alps through Haast pass, the only rainy day on our way, we entered West coast and finished in Franz Jozef. The rain forests and its fern trees – it was  the other planet, hundreds of kms, because of rain we could see hundreds of amazing waterfalls all around on the way from Haast pass to glaciers.

Franz Jozef glacier showed us its beauties next morning, the walk to the glacier takes there and back cca 2 hrs, with 30 min. stop at its mouth. Then we watched the keas in the trees, there is a lot of them. We found our car ok. Next stop was Hokitika and Greymouth and a lot of stops on unbelievable beaches and sites of West Coast. We ended for the night in Punakaiki, watching blowhole theatre and spending nice evening in the campsite next to the beach, watching the sunset.

Next day we stopped in Westport, crossed the hilly inland through Buller gorge, tried walking on swing bridge close to Murchison, spent some time in Abel Tasman reserve, where we swam in the ocean in two beaches. We finished our day in Nelson beach, having evening walk in the city center.

Last moments in South Island we spent next day by driving to Picton through picturesque

Queen Charlotte drive, with a lot of curves, nature of Marlborough Sounds around was incredible. The highlight of the day was crossing the Cook strait on the ferry to Wellington, 3 hrs sail.

After arriving to North Island we quickly got off from city during the creating traffic jams and went north, stopping at one beach to get a little refreshment in the sea. We camped in Bulls´s s farm that night.

The other day was the day full of places with geothermal activity, volcanoes, geysers, baths at the places like Tongariro, Taupo and Rotorua, where we ended that day.

Last full day with our car was kiwi fruit farm and Coromandel peninsula, sweeping the beaches along, from Waihi to Hahei, stopping long time in Hot water beach, where I found only cold water under the sand. Maybe next time I will find the right place. After crossing the peninsula we camped in Thames, in the park full of flowers. It was very different from the previous day, when we breathed the healthy air full of sulphur in Rotorua.

Next day we had last 100 km to Auckland, where we returned the car after we drove 3200 unforgetable kms. It was the holiday me and my family will never forget! We stopped in so many places all around this beautiful country, having no stress, and no time pressure, and 100% realizing all the nature beauties, cities and people around us. Great, great, great !!!

We appreciate that our Cheapa Campa campervan was perfect all the time we had no problems!

We love New Zealand and we hope we will come back again !!!! Miki, Ludka and Laura from Slovakia, Europe
