Bay of Islands
Let us inspire your next Australian Campervan Holiday

Bay of Islands - New Zealand Travel DestinationsThe Bay of Islands is easily the most picturesque and popular destination for visitors to New Zealand. It brings together a wide range of outdoor activities with some of New Zealands most revered historic sites. Campervan rental holidays are an ideal way to enjoy all that the area has to offer, from the gorgeous views across the Bay to the laid back atmosphere and sub-tropical climate.

Captain James Cook was the first European to anchor in the Bay in 1769 at Roberton Island. He made contact with the Maoris and immediately started trading with them. Descendents of these local Maori still live here to this day. Unfortunately subsequent European settlers didn't always get along so well with the Maori.

Many of the holiday services operate out of the main tourist town of Paihia. Here you will find a range of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and accomodation options to suit all tastes and budgets. Explore the water by day, enjoy the local fare by night and retire to one of our comfortable motorhome rentals when it is time for bed.

The small town of Waitangi, situated a few minutes drive north from Paihia, is home to the historically significant treaty house; this is where New Zealand's founding document was signed by Maori and European leaders. The area can be easily accessed by campervan rental travellers and provides a unique insight into New Zealand's heritage and character.

The town of Russell, across the bay from Paihia, was once the capital of New Zealand. While it is not as rowdy as it once was, Russell is still a lively and casual island town. It is possible to set out on foot and walk north to Flagstaff Hill, this is a nature reserve that was the location of a historic battle between Maori and British Colonials. New Zealand's earliest permanent settlement is located in this region and visitors are able to view some of the original houses, stunning bush walking tracks, arts and crafts and local cuisine. In Russell you can choose to join a guided tour of the historic sites of interest or choose to travel at your own pace by taking one of our campervan rentals for a drive around the area.

The Bay of Islands provides ample thrills for adventure seekers. Cruising through the Hole in the Rock off Cape Brett is the most popular attraction, however swimming with dolphins and diving the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior are also widely popular. While there are plenty of water based activities for visitors one of the most popular things to do is to enjoy a leisurely drive around the area in your campervan hire vehicle, find a picturesque stretch of coastline and stop off for a picnic.

If you get the chance to see the Bay of Islands from a charter boat you will not be disappointed. Even if you simply hire a kayak you will be awe inspired by the view of the islands from the water.

Fishermen are amply catered for in and around the Bay. Several fishing charter operators in the area provide big game fishing adventures. However the average fisherman will find that the abundant marine life in the area makes it easy to catch fish almost anywhere. Many of the towns have jetties and wharves which are accessible to the public. All of our campervan rentals come with a range of kitchen facilities which make an ideal way to cook your own catch at the end of a satisfying day of fishing.
